A Look At The Stats – Millers v The Owls

|

Rotherham United made their fans happy by beating local rivals Sheffield Wednesday by scoring three first half goals yesterday evening.

The Millers had most of the possession – fifty-seven per cent – and had eight corners with our visitors not getting one. Although we did get fifty-two per cent of the duels success the Owls won more battles in the air (although I’d have given a couple of per cent to the drone that stopped the game for five minutes).

We had fifteen shots on goal, eight on target and three that stood as goals while our neighbours had two on target from seven shots. Our passing accuracy in our opponents half came out at fifty-nine per cent and we had three hundred and seventy-eight passes to the Owls’ three hundred.

Sheffield Wednesday conceded seventeen fouls to the Millers’ twelve and we had three booked to their two while they had a player sent-off.

What the stats don’t tell you is how good Jamie Lindsay was last night, they can’t tell you the look on his face when he headed that ball into the net for the opener, they don’t tell you how important that goal was to the Millers. We got that goal and you could visibly see the confidence in the team improve, we got the penalty – and it was a penalty – and any nerves we get when we go one up and think we’ve got to hold on disappeared (and I’m not just talking about the players!) Yes, we made mistakes, yes our opponents had chances but our opponents heads also dropped and they looked clumsy. Coming out for the second half three-nil up has got to give you confidence but this is us, the Millers, who we’ve seen sit back on a lead and then lose it. We didn’t do that last night. We fought for every ball, any of our passes that went awry we fought to get the ball back. All in all we looked like a Championship side.

It’s a quick turn-around for Rotherham this week with a trip to the bet365 Stadium to take on Stoke City on Saturday. Let’s hope we can capitalise on last nights result.

Up The Millers.
